When last Wednesday I was walking near Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish monarchs in Copenhagen, I was struck by the peace and quiet. A few tourists, a couple of locals and a dozen of soldiers guarding the area didn't make a crowd which is present in front of Buckingham Palace in London every single day.
![]() Queen Margarethe of Denmark might not be as popular as Queen Elizabeth but the Danish Royal Family is far more respected by her subjects than the British monarchs. In the recent Jylland-Posten poll the Queen could enjoy the support of 82.3 percent of Danes. The YouGov poll shows that 65 percent of British people want Queen Elizabeth to stay on in her role.
Even though the Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world - its lineage, which includes 52 royals can be traced back to Gorm the Old, who passed away in 958 - such a big support for monarchy in Denmark is not something the Danish kings and queens have always had. The period of absolutism, where nobody could question the power of the king, continued until 1849, when Frederik VII introduced a constitutional monarchy.
